After a celebrated career spanning nearly two decades, Mexican football star Carlos Vela has announced his retirement from professional football. The 35-year-old forward, known for his flair, creativity, and technical prowess, made his decision public through a heartfelt message shared with fans and the football community.
Vela’s career began in the early 2000s, when he quickly rose through the ranks after winning the Golden Boot at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup. His talent earned him a move to Arsenal, where he began his European journey. Though he spent much of his time on loan during his stint in England, Vela eventually found his footing with Real Sociedad in Spain, becoming a fan favorite and an integral part of the squad.
In 2018, Vela took a bold step by joining Major League Soccer as the marquee signing for Los Angeles FC. His time in MLS was marked by dazzling performances, record-setting goals, and leadership that helped LAFC become a dominant force in the league. In 2019, he won the MLS MVP award after a record-breaking season in which he scored 34 goals.
Internationally, Vela represented Mexico in multiple tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where he contributed to several memorable moments for El Tri.
In his retirement statement, Vela expressed deep gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and supporters. “It’s been an incredible journey. I’m thankful for every moment — the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Football gave me so much, and now it’s time to begin a new chapter,” he said.
Though Vela is stepping away from the pitch, he hinted at staying involved in the sport, possibly in a mentorship or managerial capacity.
As the curtain closes on Carlos Vela’s playing days, fans around the world reflect on a career that blended natural talent with passion and professionalism — a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of footballers.
